Facebook to Pay $650 Million to Settle Facial Recognition Suit

• The lawsuit claimed that Facebook illegally collected and stored biometric data for millions of users without their consent, via “tag suggestions” feature

• The judge approves $650 million settlement

• Under the revised settlement, class members will receive $200 to $400 each. The class includes all Facebook users in Illinois for whom Facebook created and stored a face template between June 7, 2011, and Aug 19, 2020

• The 2008 Illinois law carries civil penalties of $1,000 for each negligent violation and $5,000 for each knowing violation

• Facebook tried to settle the suit for $550 million in January but that offer was rejected by a judge for not being enough
